Derek
Channing Dies at the age of 68
On June 18, 2008 the banjo
world lost a big supporter of the instrument. Derek was a resident
of Livonia, Michigan but originally from London, England. Derek
was a retired Ford mechanical engineer with many patents to his
name. He loved sailing on Mullett Lake and playing the banjo,
mandolin and ukulele. He was very active in the four-string
banjo community with his favorite instrument the plectrum banjo.
He belonged to many groups over the years, including the Garter
Snappers plus 4, Banjos of Michigan, Flint Banjos, Windsor
Banjos and the Silver String Dulcimer Society. He also enjoyed
participating in the annual Great Lakes International Banjo
Convention for many years. Recently, he volunteered to teach
kids to take up an interest in playing, and formed a group
called "Next Generation Banjo Band". His most recent passion was
to keep the old ragtime style of playing alive.

Don
Vappie's Original Score To Air On PBS Tonight
Don Vappie has preserved
the sound of New Orleans with Creole influence. He not only is
an excellent musician (banjo) but a great arranger. He has done
transcriptions of all the great jazz players and now he creates
his own original score for the "American Masters" series Zora
Neale Hurston: Jump at the Sun.
Zora Neale Hurston was an
American folklorist and author during the time of the Harlem
Renaissance, best known for the 1937 novel Their Eyes Were
Watching God.
